What does air ionization through electronic stimulation require?
I remember something on mythbusters about an air ionizer that used high voltage, but they didn't give much detail about it. Does this kind of ionization require just high voltage, or does it also require amps and some kind of pulse or special wave form? And does the wire have to be bare, or can it be insulated?
Air will ionize at different voltages depending on humidity, movement, etc. My company has designed and produces high voltage cascades use in the industrial automotive painting at GM, Chrysler, Land Rover, BMW, etc. Our unit goes up to 100KV, with very low current up to 200uA. Usually at 50KV the air will not ionize at all, but as soon as you get above 50KV it will start breaking down. The output is DC, but as it moves through the unit it is AC. The hard part is not generating the HV it is shutting it down before it can arc, consider this is used in a flammable atmosphere.
