What was the role of Native American children in daily life and society?
What would the role of a child be in an Native American tribe?
It doesn't have to go into specifics between tribes, but just in general, what was the role of Native American children?
well i know our children were and still are not treated like little adults. that was more of a european thing.
our children were mostly taught by grandparents and other elders of the nation because parents were busy farming or hunting or building etc. grandparents took on the role of teachers.
children were pretty much allowed to try many different things in our nations it is believed they already possess gifts and they must discover what their talents are. a child might pay with a small bow and arrow which was a common gift given to a child because it was such an essential part of our life then.
in our culture children were allowed to voice opinions as well even in council. there was no such thing as "children should be seen and not heard" for us. that was strictly an idea europeans brought here.
basically young children were allowed to learn by following adults and doing. however compared to modern times, they were expected to begin taking on adult duties at a relatively young age..12 or 13 depending on the child.
