How do I paint my already painted drum set?
I want to re-paint my drums that are already painted. How do I do this? Do I first sand them down and then paint them. And what kind of paint do I use. And for the rims and lugs and stuff how do I do that. And my snare drum is silver metal or some material like that how would I paint that? Thanks
First of all, make sure it is a paint job on the drum set and not a wrap. If it's a wrap you'll have to remove it.
If it's paint. Remove the heads and hoops. Get a screwdriver and remove the lugs. Sand the shells with 400 grit sandpaper. You're not removing all the paint. In fact, you will never get through the automotive grade clear coat by hand sanding. You're just scuff sanding.
Prime the shells. You can do this and the paint with rattle-cans, just make sure the primer and paint you use are the same brand. Get the primer nice and level. Spray your paint next.
Here's what you do now...if you want to just add a layer of protection, brush or spray on a clear coat. One or two coats and you should be done. It will not look professional. It won't look good up close.
If you want a really nice satin finish. Buy a Satin Polyurethane. Clear coat it with about 2-3 coats then wait 24 hours. Wet sand with 400. Add another coat or two and wait another 24 hours. Wet sand with 600 and clear coat. Wait 24 hours. Hit it with some Wood Paste Wax, wax on wax off like a car and you'll be good. the wax and the poly are available at home depot.
If you want a high gloss finish take the shells to a place that paints cars and pay them to do it.
The metal snare drum will not take paint. It has to be sandblasted and powdercoated. Find a local body shop or motorcycle shop and they can do it for about $100.
